Your teaching tips

My primary mission is to keep workouts interesting for clients. I want to maintain their enthusiasm and regular improvements over the course of their lives. I put a lot of thought into each workout to make sure that it is varied and suitable to their needs.

Favourite Exercise and reason why?

My favorite exercise is spine stretch in the reformer well. I love using all aspects of the reformer and stretching while strengthening the back feels incredible.

tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience in the industry

I have a Bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology and a Masters degree in Kinesiology. I became certified by the PhysicalMind Institute in 2002 and owned a Pilates studio in Chicago for 12 years. I have written 7 'Pilates Expanded' books which are available on Amazon. I also designed and patented the 'Pilates Unforld' which is a space-saving, multi-purpose reformer/tower combo unit that stores against the wall like a Murphy bed. You can view it here: http://pilatesexpanded.com/blog1/introducing-the-pilates-unfold/

Currently I am offering private sessions as well as Pilates retreats at my river home in the mountains of Colorado. In addition to the fully equipped Pilates studio, the property features a Tipi Zen Den, a walking labyrinth, an obstacle course and a hot tub (among other fun local activities). Visit my website for more details: www.PilatesExpanded.com

Do you have a motto or mission statement?

Joseph Pilates is said to have drawn inspiration from boxing, gymnastics, skiing, diving, body building, wrestling, self defense & rehabilitation. All of which were prevalent during his lifespan of 1883-1967. Today's generation of Pilates-inspired instructors have the benefit of further influence from balance training, sport specific training, functional fitness, physical therapy, dance, martial arts, etc. To consummately preserve Joe's work from the middle of last century solely honors his death. To expand your practice by drawing additional inspiration from the growing advances in the health and fitness field pays homage to his life.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

In five years I hope to be offering specialized Pilates workshops and retreats at my Colorado home for teens, sport-specific training, healthy pregnancy, special needs, and other customized programming.

Pilates has been my lifeline since 1986 when I was asked to join the staff of the St. Francis Hospital's Dance Medicine Division where Pilates primarily started in the San Francisco Bay Area. I went on to become an Exercise Physiologist and a Doctor of Physical Therapy. I got into Pilates after a fall in a performance that set my spine off. It took years to sort out and Pilates has not only kept me from becoming disabled but drove me to places I never dreamed would be possible. My passion is especially Spinal Asymmetry and I am appreciative to my friend and mentor Elizabeth Larkham for introducing me to the publishers at Handspring Publishing. My book just came out last fall and I am now busy teaching throughout the US, UK and Asia to spread the word!
