WHERE DO YOU TEACH?

I teach in my wonderful studio at home in the garden -  Farnham Surrey.

Your teaching tips

Well I feel like I learn something new every day which is very exciting, and the more injuries a client has the better and more satisfied I feel when they feel better.  

I like to think of the studio as a calming place for people to come and reflect on themeselves for an hour, and to forget the crazy life that we all live.  

During lockdown I transitioned straight into Zoom classes, I hadn't taught mat classes for sometime and it was great because I was doing the exercises with them I actually felt like I learnt a lot about my teaching, really thinking about visual queing for instance, becuase in the studio it's very hands on,  and sometimes after so long in the studio I feel like it can get a little repetative.

Favourite Exercise and reason why?

Its got to be feet in the Straps on the Reformer!

As a dancer it's such a good one to feel a stretch and open up the hips, but also working on control through the pelvis and core. 

tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience in the industry

I trained at the Bush Davies Ballet school from the age of 10 years old, that's all I ever wanted to do from a very early age.  After being at full time ballet school I decided to go into musical theatre, as singing was a big part of my life, after graduating from drama school age 18, I worked for a few years in the Theatre, which was amazing until I wanted to buy my own flat and earn some money!  

I then owned a franchise of the part time drama school Stagecoach for 10 years.  Whilst doing that I did a 18 month fully comprehensive training in Pilates with Pilates Foundation - always knowing that one day I wanted my own studio.  Which opened in 2005, and I gave up Stagecoach.

Since teaching pilates I have not only learned about my own body, I only wish I knew half of what I know now when I was training to be a ballet dancer, and how important it is to keep moving and to keep both body and mind active the older I get.  

Do you have a motto or mission statement?

 "Every Body is different"

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

Hopefully still doing Feet in the Straps on the Reformer, and still learning something new every day!!

I have been teaching Studio Pilates for 15 years in Farnham Surrey. I got into Pilates from a dancing background, when I was at dance school you were only allowed to use the reformers as part of rehabilitation after an injury - how Pilates has changed! The best part of my job is meeting people and hearing them say how much better they feel after a session of Pilates!

I began my practice as a holistic therapist in 1993. Many of my massage clients would come regularly for treatment for back and neck pain often caused by their posture. This led me to explore and train as a Pilates teacher as I strongly believe that preventative measures are much more effective than cure . I aim to bring fun and enjoyment to my class as not everyone naturally enjoys exercising. This helps people to incorporate Pilates exercise into their lives in the long term.
