I run my own business which runs 23 weekly Pilates, Yoga and Barre classes in my home studio and other locations in Highgate, North London.
I like to keep my lessons fresh and varied and I love resources such as Pilates Anytime. I have inspiration on tap with the wonderful instructors who teach for Highgate Pilates & I try and attend their classes when I can. We offer bespoke classes & our ethos is very much about the individual so that they feel safe & cared for. Everyone is so busy these days and knowing that your client is investing their precious hour with you should be respected. I think a teacher should always show enthusiasm & interest in their clients & we try & go that extra mile. A compliment about a clients progress at the end of class or by email goes a long way. I'm not naturally organised but I get easily stressed when things are not in order. I try and have a calm Sunday night when I can organise & pencil admin times in for the week ahead & get my lesson plans in order.
I love many of the classical Pilates exercises particularly the ones that stretch & articulate the spine like Rollover & Rollup. I feel the benefits of daily stretching now that I'm in my mid 40's & I've blended some Yoga and Pilates exercises into a 10 minute flow routine that I try and do first thing or before I go to sleep.
My fitness career is relatively new as I was a secondary school Drama teacher and Head of Year over a 10 year period in an East London school before I had my daughters. When they were little I knew I wanted to get back into teaching but craved a different & a more flexible lifestyle where ideally I could work locally and be around for my children after school. I have always been passionate about exercise & it seemed an obvious choice to combine the two. I did my Pilates training with Bodycontrol and qualified in 2012 and then went on to become a BarreConcept Instructor and also completed a 6 month foundation course with Tara Fraser at Yoga Junction. Although I didn't initially have ambitions to grow my business the classes filled up quickly which gave me the opportunity to expand and take on local teachers that I knew would be a tremendous asset to have on board. I have now been able to step back a little from the actual teaching and concentrate on the admin side & growing the brand which I'm really enjoying.
I use the motto 'One life, One Body' on my website and leaflets. I think people still perceive a Pilates class or an hour in the gym as a bit of a luxury and that when things get busy exercise gets pushed down the list when in fact they should be looking after themselves even more. Exercise has so many benefits as we all know and it's vital to find a routine & stay active to help maintain our health as we get older. I thinks it's about striving for balance so that we are looking after our bodies & mind to enable ourselves to get the very best out of every area of our life & to stay healthy & independent into our old age.
To be honest if I can maintain what I have achieved in the last 4 years I would be very happy. I have worked hard to create a business that is successful but enables me to achieve a work-life balance and be there for my daughters as they grow up. I do like to be busy though and hopefully other opportunities will arise that will further my learning & development & challenge me in different ways.
